    FA Hyper Pro X – Initial thoughts…

Just a few thoughts on the release of the hyper pro x by freak athlete. I’ve gotten to see tons of video and reviews of this since home gym con.

Overall my thoughts are that this seems like a good upgrade and direction for freak athlete. For new people considering, it looks better than the original hyper pro. There will be slightly less set up and it does look more stable. I watched someone test its stability by over doing exercises hard, with lots of motion, and it was pretty good and held up. Pads seem updated but on first glance I don’t see huge differences there in the amount of foam.

As far as it being smaller – yes its shorter. So on the floor it will take up less space. Vertically, well if you needed that extra vertical space then yes, but for me that vertical space could be 10′ tall for all I care. There is a very simple mod to take off the legs of the current hyper pro to make it a similar height too.

I also really like that the leg developer from their bench is the same one for the hyper pro. That makes a ton of sense to combine the ecosystems. Good job there FA.

Would I upgrade this if I had the current hyper pro? No reason too unless you like to have the latest and greatest. Old one is more than fine and does all of the same stuff. In fact you can prob find one used for a good price.

Concerns? There are several. Some of these are my original concerns of the hyper pro itself and some are new concerns.

First concern, that is no longer a concern of mine, so I prob shouldn’t even list it, was how well it did GHRs. But FA owner even reached out to show me a video of him and others doing them just fine. Seems like this concern was overblown by me. This is a non concern now.

Second concern has been a concern of mine since first version – pop pin security. I like pop pins that go all the way through the crossmember (so two holes). I am a little paranoid about this as I have had benches where the pop pin missed the hole and slipped. I think this new hyper pro x is better about this, seems much better here so this isn’t a huge concern of mine but I’d feel a lot safer if it went through the entire crossmember.

Third concern is more a rumor and I am not sure I trust this rumor at all until I’ve seen people use this device. There’s a video of someone doing a leg curl where there isn’t enough length on the machine to properly do it. There is some speculation that you can’t change that length for leg curl. I sort of doubt this to be the case. Its really tough when they are just demoing machines and don’t have time to set them up perfectly because they are just trying to show the movements. So I don’t think this concern will be true. On the current hyper pro I do need to put the roller down so that my head is comfy during leg curls, so I do see what people are saying with this new one but I really think this will be a non issue.

And that’s it. My initial thoughts on the current hyper pro. Will I buy it? Remains to be seen. As of now I am leaning towards no only because my DIY GHD is working just fine and I did sell my hyper pro a while back.

Here is the video of how I put this together:

  • DIY GHD for GHRs

    DIY GHD for GHRs

    DIY GHD for GHRs

Since selling my Hyper Pro and debating buying the next iteration, I’ve had to figure out how to do GHRs. So after playing around for the past few weeks, I’ve finally got a version of a GHD that I am happy with, has no weird or uncomfortable issues, and feels as solid as my Hyper pro or really any GHD did. I do GHRs 2x a week and sometimes use weights. This set up is stable.

Its a very simple set up, takes no longer than 15 seconds. Here are the materials:

    • Rep GHD pads (I’ve had these for years and bought them on a rep sale for maybe $40)
    • Crossmember. This is what the pads are laying on top of to keep them off the ground and give my knees a few inches of space
    • 3 safety pins. First pin keeps the pads from sliding forward. Second pin holds my ankles and third pin secures my feet. I tend to use safety pins for tons of DIY stuff. 2 of my pins are rogue and one is Rep.
    • Rep leg pads. These are used to secure my ankles. These came with the Rep GHD pads kit. I am using 3 of them and secure them on the safety pin with a 1″ dumbbell clip that I had laying around

It took me a few tries to work out the kinks but I am not sure what I can do to really improve this at this point. I am going to keep using and see if I decide to buy the hyper pro x or just use this set up.

The disadvantage of this set up is that you can’t set angles, although I guess I could increase the height of the pads. The other is you can’t do a hyperextension off it, but that’s something I never do with a GHR. I do my hyperextension separately and actually just prefer a roller on my rack for it.

Making the GMWD 3-in-1 Bench Press Shoulder Press Machine V7 Better

This is a mod I’ve been playing with for a while now. It basically does two things:

Allows me to start higher on the lift, allowing me to move the unit down for a better stretch while still allowing me to the top of the arc for full ROM

And second, it moves the handles 1/2″ closer to me.

  • Strength Curve on Freak Athlete Hyper Pro Leg Extension and Leg Curl

Strength Curve on Freak Athlete Hyper Pro Leg Extension and Leg Curl

For those interested in the strength curve of the freak athlete leg curl and extension I took out my luggage scale to measure it when plate loaded (not cable). I measured where you put your feet for both leg curl and leg extension. I measured several times each at 3 different points (start, middle, end) and they were all about the same. Here were the averages:

    My measurements on luggage scale:

    • Start: 10.5 lb
    • Mid: 14.5 lb
    • End: 7 lb

    Normalized Ratios:

Normalized to peak/Highest weight = 1.00 (So here I am making the highest point 1.00 so that you can see how the start and end point compare to the peak):

    • Start: 10.5 / 14.5 ≈ 0.72 = 72% of max weight
    • Mid: 14.5 / 14.5 = 1.00= 100% of max weight
    • End: 7 / 14.5 ≈ 0.48 = 48% of max weight

    What does this mean?

Basically what this means is that the beginning of the movement is around 3/4 of the peak/Middle and the end is around 1/2 of the peak/middle.

    My thoughts:

Do I think this is good or bad? I actually think this is decent for a plate loaded machine. The more consistent throughout the better but I am OK with these numbers. I’ve seen far worse from other machines where the starting point is near zero which is a worst case scenario.

Technically on these movements I’d prefer the highest number to be the start where I am stretched out but overall I don’t think that matters for most people. Also if the start was the heaviest, it would really drop off at the end. But also that would be better with bands that would make it heavier as you stretched them more.

    Notes:

*Note that luggage scales vary a bit because the weight moves as you move. I did test multiple times time get averages but for example I’d say there is a 3-5% variance. Like the 74% at start might be 72%-76%

*Just a point of reference for this and all machines – don’t worry about comparing 50lbs on this machine vs 50lbs on another leg curl. Compare this machine to itself, figure out weight you can do, and progress from there. Middle point of the lever where the weight is will always be the heaviest.

*I do have the cable attachment but did not measure that during this test. This is for plate loaded only. I did not measure with bands either. Maybe another day I will do those.

  • Is Mikolo discontinuing the Taweret?

    Is Mikolo discontinuing the Taweret?

This is the latest image on their site as of 3/12/2026. They have also pulled it completely off amazon. The walmart version is discounted heavily.

I also saw on reddit that someone contacted their customer service and the person from mikolo confirmed that they are selling current stock and the machine is not coming back. I don’t always trust these customer service reps though, we get a lot of misinformation from them. Having said that, it aligns with what we are seeing online.

So is Mikolo discontinuing the Taweret? My guess is yes they are and probably they are coming out with something new to replace it. The reviews of this machine were great and people liked it a lot. There is a demand for a leg curl and leg extension thats small like this and companies like lionscool and ritfit are making them too.

But the taweret also had some issues. Im not sure I’ve seen a machine break more in reviews than this. At least three reviews out there show it breaking during use!

So here’s my guess as to what’s going on…

I assume they are fixing the things that break and coming out with a new machine. They already have two versions of the taweret because they upgraded the pads. So this would be a version 3. Having said that, I bet their relationship with GMWD might not be continuing. I don’t see GMWD promote the taweret at all. Not even a little bit. So my guess is that mikolo comes out with an upgraded version, by themselves, with a completely new name. When will that happen? I assume fast. Companies like this move extremely quick so I would assume it could even be next week…of course Im guess. It could also be never!

  • GMWD 3 in 1

    GMWD 3 in 1

I already reviewed this multi chest press machine but took some footage of it this morning. I am still using it for both flat and incline press weekly and my son does his incline press on it.

My 3 month take mirrors my reviews – its a cool machine and its like a smith machine for dumbbells. Im not using the OHP feature mostly because Im not doing much OHP these days.

  • Who needs a multiflight?

    Who needs a multiflight?

I posted this as a joke but I do think the ‘need’ for a multiflight is interesting when there are so many things that do similar. I say this as I believe cables are probably superior and multiflights take up a lot of space, so its a tough sell in a home gym. But if you have the cash, space, and want the variation, sure they are cool for sure.

  • Preacher curl attachment that works with any bench

Preacher curl attachment that works with any bench

I’ve been posting about this bells of steel preacher attachment for a while and am glad to finally get it reviewed. Honestly its a great option for those that don’t want to be tied to a bench ecosystem. This and the bells leg curl and extension attachment.

I don’t have anything negative to really say about this piece. It works as it should. I’ve used it with cables, ez curl, dumbbells, and the weight horns that it comes with. Only gripe with this and any bench attachment is storage. This fortunately stands by itlsef and is easy to move around, you just need a 2×2′ area to store it.

There is an easy mod if you want to stabilize it with your bench using a piece of wood but I dont think you need to do that. Its working just fine as is. I’m looking forward to more companies creating stuff like this that stands alone (looking at you gearforfit).
