Hey all…My name is Rayme, otherwise known around various sites as jiujitsuPhD. I also go by Ray, Raymond, etc….really I respond to anything that sounds like my name lol.
I’m a 47 yrs old middle age suburban dad that likes health and fitness.
I care a ton about health and started lifting when I was 17 yrs old. I’ve been lifting or doing sports since that time. I started really focusing on diet and longevity heath around 24yrs old when I was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called WPW. It was a major wake up call to me. While I was lucky to be able to have a procedure to cure it, that wake up call changed the rest of my life.
I am not certified in any health field so as a disclaimer don’t listen to anything I say and always consult with your doctor before doing or trying anything! My undergrad, masters, and PhD are not health related in any way! I am only posting things that I’ve learned, thought about, read in the literature/research, and wonder about. I’m learning and this is my learning portal.
My personal goal is being healthy, looking young, staying physically young, injury free, and being fit. I don’t care about big lifting numbers and I’m not trying to get bigger (well maybe a tad bigger haha).
I love making content, especially video, which is why I have a youtube channel and this site. I created this site as way for me to share info about health, fitness, aging, longevity, and lifting with myself I guess as I’m not sure anyone will ever visit this site since everything is ‘social media’ now. I’m not big on social media posting for whatever reason and this site is much better for me to organize my thoughts.
My goal is to share research. Share tips. Share stories. Review products.
My username, jiujitsuPhD, was created over 20 yrs ago as my xbox username. At the time I was just starting my doctorate at Penn State and doing lots of BJJ…so yeah, thats where the name came from. I do have a PhD in a tech/STEM field and I still practice BJJ but now just teaching my kids and occasional rolling with guys I trust. I had to stop training consistently after a few bad injuries and am a purple belt. Most of my hobby time now involves lifting, cardio, golf, guitar, writing, painting, and surfing…so lots of hobbies. Having said that, pretty much my entire life revolves around the ocean and surfing, so that’s probably a little more than a hobby.
I’ve written a few fiction books and sold my art in the past but time to do all of that is slim, especially with kids. I workout 5+ days a week. Usually thats 5 days lifting and 5 days cardio. Sometimes more or less cardio depending on how much I surf that week or do other activities but the ocean has been a staple in my life since I was in my teens.
Professionally I am a full tenured professor for a university. I am married with 3 kids and live along the beach in coastal NC (surf city nc area).
